I originally created this lovely flower motif for Yarndale 2016 - I wanted a flat, graphic flower that could be stitched onto a woolly background with some simple leaves to create a garland for Flora, the Yarndale mascot sheep.
I also made stems for the same flowers to create a small meadow for Flora to graze in, she looked so pretty on the front of the Yarndale postcards this year and has been much admired.
I've been asked many times for the pattern for this flower so I thought I would share it as it's a quick, easy-peasy make and can be stitched to pretty much anything you fancy. Stitch them to a cushion or bag, add a brooch pin to the back and pin to your favourite woolly jumper, or even applique them along the bottom of a woolly (see Emma's beautiful Folk Flower jumper for inspiration).
Use any scraps of colourful DK yarn with a 4 mm hook.
I'm writing this pattern using the following UK Crochet terms :
sl st (slip stitch) :: insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch, then through the loop on your hook.
dc [double crochet] :: insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook (note :: this is equivalent to the US sc stitch)
htr [half treble]:: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook (note :: this is equivalent to the US hdc stitch)
tr [treble] :: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through two loops on hook (two loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through remaining two loops (note :: this is equivalent to the US dc stitch)
2tr-Cluster :: yarn over, insert hook through next stitch, yarn over, hook back through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook). Then yarn over and insert hook through SAME STITCH, yarn over, hook back through stitch (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Round 1 :: chain 4 and sl st into first chain to form a ring.
Chain 2 (counts as 1 dc)
Work 7 dc into the ring (above picture)
Sl st into 2nd chain of beginning ch-2 to close the round. Fasten off. [8 dc]
Round 2 :: Insert hook into 1st dc and pull through a loop of the new colour (above picture).
Chain 2, then work 1 tr into same stitch, chain 2 (above picture)
In next stitch, work a 2tr-cluster, as follows :
yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, hook back through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook). Then yarn over and insert hook through SAME STITCH, yarn over, hook back through stitch (4 loops on hook, as pictured above), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Chain 2.
*work a 2tr-cluster into next stitch; chain 2*
Repeat between ** 6 more times.
Sl st into the top of the beginning tr (as shown by my needle in the above picture).
Fasten off. [8 clusters, separated by ch-2 spaces]
Round 3 :: Insert hook into 1st ch-2 space and pull through a loop of the new colour. Chain 2 (above picture).
Work 2 tr into same ch-2 space, chain 2.
Sl st into same ch-2 space to anchor the petal (as in above picture)
Sl st into the next ch-2 space, chain 2 (above picture)
Work 2 tr into same ch-2 space, chain 2.
Sl st into same ch-2 space to anchor the petal.
*Sl st into next ch-2 space, work 2 tr into same ch-2 space, chain 2, sl st into same ch-2 space to anchor the petal*.
Repeat between ** five more times.
Sl st into base of beginning ch-2 to close the round. Fasten off, and darn in ends.
See??? Told you it was easy peasy!!
Now lets make some simple leaves to go with Flora's Flower......
Using green yarn, chain 6.
Start in 2nd chain from hook (shown by my needle in the above picture)
Work the following stitches to create the first side of the leaf (as in above picture) ::
1 dc, 1 htr, 2 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc.
Chain 2.
The second side of the leaf is worked into the single loops of the foundation chain, mirroring the stitches on the first side, as follows :
1 dc, 1 htr, 2 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc.
Sl st into that little loop st the start of the first side of the leaf (shown by my needle in the above picture).
Fasten off and darn in ends.
Make a a few leaves to adorn your Flora-flowers, and attach them to anything woolly that needs brightening up with a little floral goodness!
If you fancy adding a stem to your flower, it's ever so easy - simply create a chain as long as you need, then work a single row of double crochet down the length.
Need a little bumble bee to buzz nearby? No problem!! There is a pattern for this cute critter already on my blog...
Here is the abbreviated version of the pattern :
FLORA's FLOWERS

Round 1 : Chain 4; sl st into 1st ch to form a ring. Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc); 7 dc into ring. Sl st into 2nd ch of beg ch-2 to close round. Fasten off. [8 sts]
Round 2 : Join new colour in first st; ch 3; 1 tr into same st; ch 2; *2tr-cluster into next st; ch 2*

Round 3 : Join new colour in first ch-2 space; (ch 2; 2 tr; ch 2; sl st) in same ch-2 so as joining.

Thank you for the flower and leaf patterns. I've recently finished a blanket for one of my granddaughters but, not being a very skilled crocheter, there are one or two (or more) little places where the stitches are less than perfect. I've had the bright idea of strategically placing little crocheted flowers to disguise my mistakes and make the blanket more interesting.

Just completed a few flowers. Going to create a card for my daughters birthday. I only did one chain on the second row as two were a bit loose for me and it worked great. Thanks a million. Kathy warwickshire

I’ve now crocheted 3 ripple blankets using your pattern as well as some mandalas and a small wreath. I’m now embarking on my first big wreath and am using some of your flower and leaf patterns for this. Thank you for your fantastic ideas and clear, easy to follow patterns.
