This is a really nifty little pattern for making a neat bobble-shell edging. I created it to finish off the top and bottom edges of my crochet Wrist Warmers, but it could be used along any edge that needs a neat little finishing touch.
Please note that this bobble shell edging is worked from the Wrong Side.
Stitches used ::
sl st (slip stitch) :: insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch, then through the loop on your hook.
Dc (Double Crochet) :: insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. (NB this is equivalent to US sc stitch)
Tr :: yarn over, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through two loops on hook (two loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through remaining two loops. (NB this is equivalent to US dc stitch)
Bobble-shell Cluster :: yarn over, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull loop back through stitch (three loops on hook), Yarn over and pull through two loops in hook (two loops left on hook). Yarn over, insert hook through same stitch, yarn over, pull loop back through stitch (four loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all four loops.
The edging is worked in two rows. For Row 1, make sure you have the Right Side of your work facing you. Join in your edging yarn and draw a loop through the first stitch to begin.
Row 1 :: Chain 2, and work a row of UK Double Crochet (US Single Crochet), as pictured above.
Now turn your work so that the Wrong Side is now facing you.
Row 2 :: Chain 3, then 1 Tr into the first stitch. Sl st into the next stitch.
**Into the next stitch, work a Bobble-shell cluster, as follows ::
[yarn over, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull loop back through stitch (three loops on hook), Yarn over and pull through two loops in hook (two loops left on hook). Yarn over, insert hook through same stitch, yarn over, pull loop back through stitch (four loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all four loops, as in two pictures above].
Sl st into next stitch.**
Repeat between ** until you reach the end of the row and fasten off.
Above picture shows the Wrong Side of the work.
And this picture shows the bobble-shell edging as it looks from the Right Side.
As always, please do let me know if you have any probs with this little pattern and I'll do my best to help.Happy hooking :o)

Lucy,
I love visiting your blog from time to time, and have enjoyed your tutorial for the bobble shell edging on a few projects. I am timidly attempting my first ever crochet pattern for public use - fingerless mitts, you know! Anyway, I used your edging on the top of them, and wanted your permission to link to your tutorial when I post the pattern. What do you think?
Your colorful style is sometimes a lifesaver for me, here in Portland, OR where it can be downright dreary after a few weeks of regular rain. I just adore your bright, rainbow-y, stripey style! Thank you!!

Hi Lucy, I discovered your blog about two weeks ago and wow how I love it. Such enthusiasm, colour, vibrancy and joy you share with us. Thankyou! I'm another one of your readers who has been inspired to take up the crochet hook and create more beautiful things. I love having lots of creative things on the go and crocheting has been added to knitting, sewing, crosstich, oil painting, gardening and baking. Hope you and your family are well and enjoying summer in the Northern hemisphere.
Regards, Anne

Lucy, a friend of mine asked about your crochet work. Do you sell it? She's highly interested in buying some of your work.

Hi Lucy,
Thank you so much. I love the wrist warmers and the edging is fantastic. You are the best, without your wonderful tutorials I don't think I could have done any of the projects I've completed. This one is next in the line up. Right now I'm working on your soft waves ripple pattern for my LM and I am loving it! I taught myself to crochet the last week of April with your help and have not put the hook down since. You are such a giving person, thank you!
hugs,
Rita RC
