Good morning, good morning!! I love love love Friday's, don't you? It's a lovely feeling waking up and knowing that the morning is all about getting excited by colours and indulging in some pleasurable hooky time, well it is for me at any rate and I am very, very grateful for it. Firstly I get to chat to you here in the Attic, and then off I go to the café to spend the whole morning with my real life yarny tribe which is a true highlight of my week. I have four friends at our café group who are all CAL-ing with me on this Sungold journey, plus the thousands of you out there around the globe who are with us too. It's like getting a huuuuge warm hug every time I think of us all collectively making blankets together, and I couldn't love it more. I maybe don't say it often enough, but I'm so thankful for you all!

Ahhh, the Sungold colours are just so, so HAPPY, aren't they? I adore the warmth of them, and the feeling of gentle sunshine that seems to glow around them. You have no doubt noticed the lack of blues by now, and for me this was a very conscious decision. I decided right at the start of working on this colour collection that it needed to be all about the sunshine, and although there was a big part of me that wanted to include a blue sky, I knew instinctively that blues would cool the warm glow. However, even with the blues missing, the Sungold colours still fall very easily into a natural rainbow order which is very easy on the eye.
I know from experience that many people feel comfortable and uplifted by a rainbow, so I always work my samplers to reflect the natural order of the colour wheel. It seems to make sense to our human brains and I think for some people who find bold colour mixes a bit overwhelming, the rainbow order brings calm to the mind.
Today I thought it would be fun to share some rainbow Sungold blankets with you, so that you can see the effect I'm talking about....
^^ Denise got her Sungold blanket off to a great start and chose the Meadow Stripe pattern to create these beautiful, orderly rows.
^^ Diane chose a bold granny stripe to showcase her Sungold rainbow and I love how unapologetically JOYFUL it looks.
^^ WOW, look at this stunning Sungold rainbow, doesn't it just glow with warmth? Helen chose the Seashell stripe pattern for her blanket which is a great choice, it really blends those colours beautifully.
^^ Debbie is using the Lacy Shell stripe like most of us, but she has chosen to make double-width stripes to create a bolder, rainbow effect. It's going to be a very striking blanket when it's finished, I love it.
^^ Laurence decided to leave out two of the more dominant shades (Magenta and Tomato) which gives a slightly softer look to the colour palette. There is such a lovely visual rhythm to her repeating colour order, very lovely indeed.
^^ Heather got started on her Sungold journey back in the Autumn using the Hydrangea Stripe pattern. She decided to follow my colour order but then work it as a "mirror repeat" throughout the blanket. This is always a wonderful way to create a striking stripe, it creates a very dynamic effect when used with strong colours.
^^ And lastly, I just had to share this wonderful photo with you - this is Rhonda working on her Sungold Harmony. At the end of Round 3 last week, she arranged all her squares in such a beautiful way for her photo, I honestly swooned with delight when I saw it.
Thank you so much to everyone who is sharing such wonderful pictures of their progress, it really makes my day to see them. I'll share some more with you next week.
You remember the past few weeks I've picked out three shades from the Sungold colour palette and shared some inspiration photos with you? Well today is all about the calming effect of the greenery.
I absolutely love the photo above - it showcases the wonderful work of David Watkins who creates the most mesmerising kinetic sculptures inspired by nature. You can see more of his work ((here)).
It can be easy to overlook the importance of the greens when we are focussed on the drama of all the flowers, but they are an essential component of this colour palette. They provide a cool, calm resting point in amongst the riot of hot shades and without them the palette would probably be too much. Too much shouting, too much heat, too much drama.
I chose Cypress as my base colour, then added Sage and Lincoln to reflect the lovely silvery grey foliage plants I saw at Harlow Carr.
At RHS Harlow Carr, the gardens are very mature and there are large areas of grass and natural woodland which form a beautiful backdrop to the flower beds. There is also an abundance of carefully planted foliage - a beautiful patchwork of textures and subtle shifts through the green colour palette.
As soon as I saw this wonderfully spiky plant I knew that I would include a pale, silvery green in my palette. It's such a great balance for all the floral dramatics, a calming shade which I adore.
I took the above photo to show more of those lovely silvery greens, but also the great variation in all the green shades, from the Lime coloured grass in the front, through to the deeper mature deep green shrubs at the back. It's also a good photo to show you the inspiration behind the Lacy Shell stitch pattern. Can you see the undulating, rounded shapes formed by layers of shrubs and perennials in the deeply planted borders.....
.....and how I translated that into this simple, undulating stitch pattern? It's a loose connection I know, but I do always try and design a stitch pattern that reflects something of the inspiration source. I don't know about you, but I am really, really LOVING this pattern - it's fast and rhythmic to crochet and the teeny little shells all holding onto each other just make me feel happy! Haha - crazy but true.
There is a slowness to January which can make it a bit of a drag, and in the past I've often found it a tricky month to navigate. I think that having a colourful blanket to work on in these slow, stay-home weeks has made a massive difference to my wellbeing, and I am so thankful for it. I know for a fact that if I wasn't doing this crochet-along project, then January would feel very flat and lifeless. Grey. Dull. Thank heavens for colourful bags of yarn and joyful stripes galore!!
Week 4 (FOUR!) and my blanket is growing and blooming beautifully......
......just look how fantastically blankety it's looking!!!
Part four sees us moving well up into the second half of the blanket as we complete up to stripe 69. It's crazy-satisfying to see the blanket laid out and looking so fiiiiine, knowing that it's only going to get better and better by the day. I LOVE crocheting blankets so so so much, everything about making them fills me with joy. I get so excited seeing the growth each week!!
I hope you're enjoying the journey as much as I am, it's what Januarys (and Februarys) were made for.
So Part 4 of the Sungold CAL and there are 18 stripes for you to hook up this week, beginning with Boysenberry and ending in Lime.

^^ I'm really loving the Sungold Colouwash blankets that are being shared on social media, they look more and more beautiful each week. Rachael took a lovely photo of her blanket at the end of last week, with zesty Lime at the top giving us a hint of the greenery to come.
Yes, part 4 it's all about the grass, leaves and foliage.....hello Cyprus, Sage and Lincoln.
Shown above is the colour info for Part 4 of the Sungold COLOURWASH Blanket. Remember each stripe is made up of two rows of crochet, so when you work the triple bands of colour, this will be six rows of crochet.
