Lovely story Lucy. Living in Australia, we always wonder why you Britts don’t travel to the continent more often. Takes us over 24 hours just to get to starting point over there (and thousands of dollars). My only trip to Bruges was in 1997 and we woke to the news of Princess Diana’s passing.

Lovely description of a wonderful family 'day' trip!!
Funnily enough I thought about the end of January I NEED to go to Bruges this year. Now I am determined we ARE going for a long week-end!!!

Ana Sudy

What a great way to describe the wonderful trip you did. I was there on June 2015. It is a really magnificent place to visit. Many thanks.

Winwick Mum

I'm so glad you had a fantastic visit. I loved your pictures and the top travel tips - just in time for when I go to Bruges, thank you! :) xx

Fun you write Bruges, It's Brugge in the native language, is it that way in English? And the beer is a Kriek, the Cherry used is the sour Kriek, I love them far more then the sweet cherries. They're about a month earlier then the sweet cherries too. I share mine with the blackbird living in my garden. Try to get an Krieker Lambiek in your local liquor store, tastes excellent. The thought of taking that whole journey for just 8 hours! Next time go longer, there's a chain of gorgeous places next to Brugge, as old and beautiful. All connected by water so you can take the boat to all with little hotels next to it. perhaps the two of you when the kids are older. You can rent scooters or bikes to drive into the country side. But the most sweetest part of your story is little B. I'm happy he's your son, growing up in such a creative family <3

I can't believe that an artist like yourself with your craft and design skills can spend a whole day in Bruges and not make a single comment about the hand-made lace shops. Along with chocolates, it's the other thing that Bruges is very famous for. (Although much of that lace is now imported, some is still made in Belgium and sold at a premium with a certificate of authenticity.) It lasts a lot longer than the chocolate does!
Thank you for the info about the mini cruises - I'd not heard of those.

I too love Bruges, we are very lucky to try and go at least once a yr and i never get bored, we go via Eurostar and it's just amazing. As I sit here with my right leg in a boot due to Achilles problems I can't tell you how much I enjoyed seeing your wonderful photos it really cheered me up to see so many familiar places.

What a wonderful trip for all. We too are quite spontaneous with our outings. It seems if we plan something ahead of time - something always interferes, so.....short notice trips are often the happiest, and special memory making ones - just like yours. Loved hearing about it! So heart-warming!!

What a great trip. Several years ago, after my son served a tour in Afghanistan, the two of us took a trip across the Pond and one of the places we visited was Bruges. It was in December and The Markt was lit up at night with the Christmas stalls set up around a raised ice skating rink, so it was enchanting to walk around at night having hot chocolate and watching the skaters. While it was cold, it was also sunny and we had a couple of great days strolling the town, staying a very lovely hotel down (huge wooden beams criss-crossed the room from floor to ceiling) on one of the back streets. A memorable trip. For those without children in tow, there is a brewery that does tours--with samples offered at the end.

I must say, your ferry trip reminded me of the many ferry crossings I made growing up in England. Trying to carry a tray of teas across a rolling deck without spilling is an acquired skill.

Ida

Thank you thank you for sharing! So interesting post and beautiful pictures. That would be an ideal trip for me. Take care

What a beautiful city and a lovely way to travel there and back, it certainly sounds stress-free. I am the same as you with directions, just can't do it. I realised the other day I'd been somewhere at least 12 times and I still wasn't certain of the way. My brain just doesn't work like that. I am very good a noticing the flowers along the way though. My partner instinctively knows the way like J. He can't find anything in the cupboard though, even if it's right under his nose. Glad you had such a good trip, the waffles look absolutely divine, Little B has excellent taste. CJ xx

Oh my gods! I did a similar mini cruise to Bruges about 25 years ago. It was lovely, it was autumn and a bit chilly but the colour of the trees against the buildings along the canals was heavenly. I can't remember if we ate waffles but we did drink beer under the green awning in Markt square warmed by giant gas heaters. I remember feeling awfully cosmopolitan. :-) It is a beautiful city and so glad all of you had a great time.

Hello Lucy,
I came across your blog quite by accident this morning and am so glad that did so. I read every word (with some difficulty as I have very low vision) The photographs are beautiful and reminded me of the one and only trip that I made there. I was a nurse tutor and had taken 32 adult students to see how the old folks were cared for. The year was 1968 and it's hard to believe that it's 50 years ago.
Thank you for the journey.

I went to Brugge on an eight day school trip in the late 60s and loved it. Your flowing descriptions of the town and what a great time you all had really came through in your words but I'm wondering are there no lace makers anymore or was it too early in the year for them? My lasting memory are of the boat trip and those lace makers, making Belgian lace out in the streets often sitting on the hump of one of the bridges.

Caroline

My memory of Bruges.....the massive rotisserie chicken trucks in the Saturday market and being so ill I could barely lift my head off the pillow in our hotel room. Aah maybe I need to go back. So glad you had a good time, it's such a beautiful city.

Victoria

Thank you for that lovely memory provoking trip to Bruges. We went several years ago and had a fantastic long weekend there. Your photos sparked images of chocolate, beer and delicious food. It is a great city to visit with plenty for everyone to do and see. Love the idea of the ferry must look in to that. Thanks again Lucy 😀

I am so happy for Little B! He will remember all of his life this "initiatic" trip.

Jennie Craine

Oooh - you have made me REALLY want to go now. Our kids have all been there and loved it, so perhaps one day . . .

I was so pleased that Little B thought it was the most marvellous place to go and that waffle THE best thing he'd ever eaten. He will NEVER forget his visit, that is for certain.

Lovely photos, thank you.

This post made me smile. I was born and raised in Bruges, just outside the city walls. I went to school there, and our poor bikrs conquered the cobbles evey day. My best friend as a kid lived at the Walplein, and her father drove one of those tourist boats that you took. And in high school, we gathered every day in the cute little park with the smallest window in Bruges just above our heads. Glad you enjoyed it!

Austraveller

Bruges is on my list, but alas, no mini cruise for me from Aus. Guess I’ll just have to make it a longer visit 😀

 grace horton

Wonderful pictures...thank you for taking me along.

wendy

Absolutely loved this post and see Bruges. We have done a bit of OS stuff but not been there. Those waffles look great as does that cherry beer. Awesome xo

Becky

How lovely! We are taking our motorhome across to Belgium next month and will visit Bruges whilst we are there! Hopefully Amsterdam too! XX

Carolyn wood

That looks so cool. Love to go to Belgium one day! Maybe when I make it to the uk. Take my boys.
