I took a short stroll just me and myself on Sunday morning, to enjoy the simple pleasure of walking and breathing in some damp woodland air.
I've lived here for seven years now, and still find it hard to believe that I can take this walk whenever I fancy it. I feel so lucky when I remember this fact.
It only takes ten minutes to reach the woodland from my door. Along the road, up the hill, past the chickens, along the lane, then down round the corner and I am there.
I walk slowly, ambling, gently scuffing my boots in drifts of leaves, looking out for patches of glorious Autumn colour to feed my soul.
And then through the wooden gate and into the woodland, the familiar scent of damp earth and leaves, the beautiful shafts of soft golden sunlight filtering through the trees.
Not many leaves left now, they are nearly all on the ground. But it means that the daylight shines through the canopy and the blue sky overhead looks wonderful.
I am not alone in the woodland, there are plenty of people (and dogs) doing the the exact same thing as me and enjoying a Sunday morning stroll. And yet it is still incredibly peaceful, still and quiet.
I linger a while beside the pond, drinking in the reflections and briefly wondering what the rest of the clan is up to back at home. I wish for just a very, very, very short while that they were with me, but truthfully I am enjoying the time alone.
I am drawn to the sound of rushing water and take a short detour to take in the waterfall. I just love to stand and stare at that weird and wonderful point where the still water tumbles over the edge, it's absolutely mesmerising!
It's almost lunch time and I decide it's time to head back towards town and treat myself to a fresh hot pasty from the bakers.
As I wander back along the footpath I smile when I spot Leo (the little pleasure boat) chugging up the beck carrying half a dozen passengers. Little B and I took a ride on that boat last Spring (when he was 3 years old) and the memory springs into my mind as if it were yesterday. Happy days.
I enjoyed taking these photographs whilst out on my walk, it's lovely to look at the pictures a few days later and remember the experience. I always carry my trusty little Point and Shoot Camera in my bag so that I can record the things that make me stop in my tracks wherever I go. Vistas and views, foliage and flowers, all in full, glorious colour. I think I'm rather liking this Autumn.

Not only do your photos remind me of home but your words are so descriptive, it's as though I am home when I read your blog. You have a beautiful way with words as well as being creative! You are a very talented lady!
My high school textiles teacher always said "you should never be without a camera as you never know where inspiration is going to come from!" Wise words!

I love your posts on daily life where you live. It's fun to see someone else's view in the world! I always love the boats...something I want to see for myself one day.

Thank you for another lovely post - bit late to the party here I hadn't noticed it until now. Reading about autumn colours has made me much more aware of the autumn colours around here and I've even started to come home from walks with little treasures - a few leaves, some rosehips or some dried grasses. Its easy when you are busy to walk around with your eyes closed isn't it? Feel like I am missing less these days though because of your inspiration xxx

We went to Yorkshire Dales a few years ago and stayed in Hawes! It is so beautiful, as is the whole of the UK! You are blessed with a stunning countryside! I love the lush green grass, the brick walls and when you fly over the country, all the different colours, looks like patchwork!! My forefathers come from the UK, so I am very patriotic to the country! My daughter lived in England, then Scotland for 4 and a half years, so I was lucky to visit 4 times! I had a ball walking with you! The autumn colours are awesome!! Rosemary Moolman, South Africa

Not really related to the Woodland Walk, but I saw these crochet flower buttons recently and thought they were right up your street;

I hope you know how lucky you are to be able to have this wonderful woodland to walk in. I live in Centurion South Africa and there is no way that you can walk alone in a woodland here. To dangerous. You live in a beautiful place. Sorry for the language, I am Afrikaans but enjoy your blog. I am a crochet addict. I've been crocheting since I was 5 years old. Your pattern instruction are the best I have ever use. I recently made the bower bird for my grandchild which is due in February 2015. Can't wait! Thanks for all your effort. Greeting from South Africa.

I love the photo collage at the end of your post. I am not usually an autumn colour girl, but these photos make me think differently.

England looks so gorgeous. Beautiful pictures. You are fab! Your posts make me so happy, especially since the weather here is so dreary. Thank you for inspiring me to rekindle my love of crochet and making things, and to enjoy the simple pleasures of life! :)

It's so lovely to just take some time out at your own pace and take in the views. I'm terrible as I take a point and shoot, my big camera and my phone. Depending on how many people are around dictates which camera I use (I don't like looking conspicuous) :-) You live in such a richly artistic place.

"This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body."

Hi Lucy, such a love forest to enjoy. My favorite part is the little waterfall, I bet it sounds melodic. We have a creek, 3 waterfalls and a pond with koi here in our back yard and I just love the sound of it. Enjoy your beautiful world. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

It's warming up fast here in Queensland, Australia. Lovely to see a hint of coolness in your air as I am not good with our humid summers. I am taking a break from packing to move a little further south for a while, so it was nice to sit and read your blog. Thank you. Marilyn
