Three Things that have made me heart-skippy-happy today..........

Thing #1 :: on my mantel ::

:: my hooky tins are back on the mantel, and I have my first little tete a tete's in the house too. They bring me such joy every year, I can't wait for those adorable little nodding yellow flowers to appear ::

Thing #3 :: in my basket ::

:: this afternoon I finished the edging on my granny patchwork blanket, yippeeee! It was a pleasure working the edging once I finally decided in my mind how to tackle it. All those riotous, colourful squares needed some gentle holding together, and I think this is one of the most successful border/edgings I've ever made. Can't wait to show you, will try and photograph it tomorrow if there is enough light ::

Easy Peasy Muffins

We are mid-winter nesting here in the Attic, and I confess it feels rather lovely. I've been wholeheartedly embracing these weekends spent at home loafing around in fluffy, cosy clothing doing fluffy, cosy things with my family. My particular fluffy-cosy activity consists of crochet and baking/eating the baking, with a smidge of meal making, fire lighting, laundry duties and floor tidying thrown in when absolutely necessary. Not a lot is being achieved, but our family is happy and content it seems.

My cosy fluffy baking (and eating) has been mainly muffin based of late, and I blame Alicia P entirely for this. Her words and pictures sent me into a spin of craving and I just had to go and create a warm, light, fluffy, fresh-from-the-oven muffin experience for myself. I was quite powerless to resist.

I have a basic recipe I use, which I would like to pass on to you. It's an Easy Peasy recipe which contains straight forward ingredients and is easily adaptable depending on the fruit content available at the time the muffin need hits.

I make small batches of only six muffins at a time. Two reasons :: 1) I love fresh from the oven muffins very much more than out of a tin muffins and 2) Little B adores baking and we bake many times a week together, so no need to make huge batches of anything.

The above muffins are Apple and Apricot and were lovely. I experimented with a bit of a streusel topping on these ones, but truthfully I think the effort of making the streusel bit was not actually worth it.

On Sunday I made raspberry muffins, and oh my, they were divine. The raspberries (from Spain) were quite sharp, but had a beautiful tangy flavour and made the muffins very moist and mmmm.

My method of making fresh berry muffins (raspberries or blueberries) is to first make the basic batter without adding the fruit. Dollop about 2/3 of it into the paper cases, then drop the fruit on top. This way, each muffin gets the same juicy amount of fruit sitting nicely right inside the muffin.

Add a little more batter on top of the fruit layer, then top with a little bit more fruit and a sprinkling of light brown sugar.

All being well, they should rise up beautifully and look all lush and plump and golden, with lovely bits of bright juicy fruit nestling on top.

And when you break into one, the texture is light and fluffy and moist. Fruity but not too sweet. Oh mmm mmm, really, they are completely yummy.

Easy Peasy Muffins (makes 6)

In a large mixing bowl, put 125g self raising flour, ½ tsp baking powder and 50g caster sugar. Mix well.

In a large jug, put 4 tbs (60ml) milk, 2 tbs (30ml) sunflower oil, 1 egg and ½ tsp vanilla flavouring. Mix well.

Tip the liquid into the dry mix and stir well to combine. You'll end up with a thick, lumpyish batter.

For apricot and apple muffins, stir in 1 grated apple and 50g chopped dried apricots (you could also use 50g any other dried fruit eg sultanas, raisins or cranberries).

For fresh raspberry or blueberry muffins, add the fruit to each individual muffin in a layer (as described above), with a few bits on top.

Divide between 6 muffin cases and sprinkle with brown sugar if you like (not essential, but nice)

Bake at 180C/Gas 4 for 25 mins.

I think technically speaking the muffins should be placed on a wire rack and allowed to cool, but that doesn't really happen around here. They kind of get pounced upon the minute they come out of the oven, ripped open and shoveled away whilst still steaming.

Edit to add :: about the paper cases....you need large muffin cases to makes these beauties as they rise a lot whilst baking and ordinary bun/cup cake cases are a bit too shallow. I buy mine from a really lovely local baking shop, they are made by a US company called MeriMeri, see here.

 Another edit to say :: re the fresh berries....in the UK they can be very expensive to buy, but are sometimes on offer in the supermarkets which is when I buy them. Also I never seem to be able to use a whole punnet before they go a bit soggy and mouldy in the fridge, so what I do is buy them when they are on offer and freeze them straight away. Scissor-snip the raspberries into smaller bits first, then open freeze them (ie lay them out on a sheet of baking paper/greasproof paper on a tray to freeze them so they don't all clump together). When they are frozen you can bag them up and they can then be added to the muffin batter straight from the freezer.

One more edit! :: I had this very useful comment from Hannah in the US...it's a conversion from grammes to cups....

"For American bakers, here are the conversions I figured out, because none of my measuring cups have the metric unit. 1 c flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 c sugar 4 T milk 2 T sunflower oil 1 egg 1/2 tsp vanilla 25 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit "

Please note that the flour needed is self raising flour (self rising flour in the US?)

More Snow + Yarn

Lots of snow here in Atticland, enough to make it too difficult to get to work and school today.

Waking up to find that lots more had fallen during the night time was predictably exciting....

...and prompted an early morning family outing to the park.

Hooray for a Snow Day!

We are really lucky to live within five minutes walk of this (usually green) open space. It's lovely in all seasons, but most especially in sunny high summer (we often pack up our dinner and eat al fresco here) and snowy mid winter.

The wide open grass is backed by a band of woodland, and the trees looked really beautiful wearing their dusting of white.

There were many, many families here yesterday enjoying some snow fun, but today it was quiet and peaceful.

I wonder if you remember me writing about snow at the beginning of last year? I was remembering it myself this morning, smiling as I recalled how much Little B detested the snow last year, how much he cried, how he refused to allow any part of his body to touch the dreaded stuff. Oh so so so different this year, a complete turn about! He absolutely loved it today. Adored it. Big smiles and huge excitement as we gave him his first proper downhill sledge run (with me on the back, shouting wheeeeeeeee!!!!)

We had such a lot of sledging fun, the Little People in their usual full-throttle fashion, me a little more reluctantly. I only gave it a go this year by way of providing weight and reassurance behind Little B, but I truly had a blast! I had forgotten the thrill of it, the way it makes you involuntarily laugh out loud.

With J's help, we rolled a huuuuuuge snowball down the hill and made a big fat snowman. The nose was made by Little B, the eyes and mouth by Little Man, and the ears by me. He stood over five feet tall and looked rather comical.

The Little People soon decided he was lonely and hastily made him a Little Brother, who developed a rather interesting nobbly-bobbly skin condition courtesy of Little B.

We played in the snow all morning, returning home when our clothes were wet through and our fingers were numb and the snow had begun to fall heavily again.

Walking in to our warm, cosy house was like being given a huge big hug. We stripped off our wet things and got changed straight back into our pyjamas. Well actually the Little People are all wearing "onesies" these days, it's like having a gang of furry animals in the house (see here, here and here to get an idea what my brood look like!)

I spent a little bit of time straightening out the sofa's, re-folding blankets and plumping up cushions. When nobody was looking I had a private little conversation with my three cashmere blankets, telling them how much I love them and how good it is to have them living here. I really cannot imagine a life without handmade blankets, it gives me tremendous pleasure to see them and use them every day.

I made  J and I a gorgeous little mug of milky coffee each (uh-huh, still completely in love with my Nespresso machine ), and we finished off the last of the weekend's Lemon Drizzle cake.

Midday I lit the fire and we all settled down for a quiet afternoon of nothing much.

For me, nothing-much-time usually means crochet time. No surprises there then.

I finished making the squares of my granny patchwork blanket over the weekend, there are 144 of them. I'm now A Hooker On The Edge (and I LoVeD writing that!!) Ahhhh, I'm really looking forward to finishing this blanket so I can spread it out to show you as it's a particularly photogenic blanket. I love that it's also just a teeny bit odd due to being a bit thrown together and essentially made up of left overs. 

After recently working with the luxury of expensive cashmerino yarn, I thought it might feel a little bit second-best returning to work with a budget acrylic. But happy to say, this is really not the case :: this Stylecraft Special Dk is really an amazing yarn for the price. It is happy and jolly and soft and easy and makes remarkable warm, snugly, gorgeous blankets.

This is the display of Stylecraft in my friend Jo's shop, which is appropriately called "Just Unwind". Fifty Six shades of gorgeously plump, 100g balls of colour. Doesn't it look beautiful? Jo takes great care arranging her shelves so that there is a huge amount of visual pleasure when you walk into her shop. It literally makes me sigh with happiness.

I took the above photo on Friday when I made a flying visit to Just Unwind to carry out a bit of retail therapy. I was on a mission to select two completely new colour collections specifically designed for blanket making...oh what a job! Taxing and glorious in equal measures! I am incredibly excited about this venture, and I have to confess I think I've done good. The colour packs I've put together are really, really beautiful and harmonious and will make terrific blankets. I won't be able to show them to you for a while, but I promise you they will be worth the wait.

2013 Begins

Day Fifteen of this new year and it feels like everything is moving at 136 miles per hour. At least 136 mph, possibly more on busy days. Talk about speedy. The packing away of Christmas (which was only a mere 8 days ago) feels like it happened a long, long time ago. Ancient history.

We have already celebrated a Birthday here in the Attic when Little B turned three years old on the 5th. It was a noisy, joyous affair, a truly happy gathering of good people, food, fizz and chocolate cake. Awwwwww that boy! At three years old he is absolutely bloomin' great. Captivating, charming, chatty and cutesome.

Once Christmas went back into it's six boxes and three bags, I went straight out and purchased a pot of hyacinths and a bunch of daffodils to welcome in the start of the new floral year. The tulips were a surprise gift from my friend and neighbour at number 18, and it has been delightful to have these flowers filling the room with colour and scent.

I've been busy with my hook too, working up those colourful granny squares in any spare moment. I love it when the end of a big project finally comes within sight (I am almost at the border-making stage folks!)

The snow came yesterday, and the 136mph rush suddenly slowed to a slow, white shuffle. In the morning we walked to school as great fat, fluffy, feathery flakes tumbled down. It made the town look so peaceful and beautiful (the above picture is the main town car park, practically deserted).

Little B and I ambled our slow pace up to the Church at the very top of town, as we do every Monday morning, for half an hour of Mad Noise Musical Tots. The church looked soooo pretty in the snow I thought.

Today has been bright and sunny and the view from the Attic window of the snowy hills in the afternoon light was stunning.

I have to say, I do love it when our seasons in the UK work properly. When Winter means snow and Summer means sun. It feels right and good to have snow in January.

Cold though. Yeah, it has been a tad chilly this week. It's been absolutely perfect blanket-making weather though, so cosy and heart-warming. Just a shame there are needy children who have to be taken to school or else I would not be moving my butt from the fireside.

Introducing Yarndale

I have been waiting patiently, oh-so-patiently to share this woolly story with you all, and am soooo excited that finally today is the day to tell. It's been six months actually, yes Half A Year that I've managed to keep this whole thing under wraps, and I have to tell you dear readers that it has been a devil of a job to keep shtumm. I don't do Secretive things very well, I am much happier with the Share Everything approach, so it is with some relief (phew!) and a huge amount of excitement (yippeeeeee!) that I am finally able to spill the woolly beans.

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you will probably know of my Thursday morning routine. You will have heard me talk about jaunting off to the cafe each week for some sociable hooky time. The cafe in question is rather gorgeous. It's light and airy, decorative and happy. There are scrubbed pine tables, mismatched chairs, old wooden church pews piled with crochet cushions. And each Thursday morning it is filled with the noisy sound of chatter and laughter when the Knit n Natter group is in full swing.

Any gathering of like-minded woolly folk is always a good thing in my opinion, and the enjoyment of sharing a creative passion with others is not to be underestimated. There is such a lot of fun and pleasure to be had when solitary crafting finds it’s way into a social situation.

When the group first began, there was only a small handful of us that met regularly, but these days we are a rather large bunch who take over half the cafe. I would say the mix is fairly evenly spread between those who crochet and those who knit, and it's always a real joy to see what everyone is working on.

So....shall we chat about the knit and crochet squares in the top picture?

Here they are look, all handmade with love and ready to be put to good use. The whole of the Knit n Natter group helped to make these squares over the course of last Summer, and it was wonderful when we finally gathered them all in and laid them out.

....what a happy, woolly jumble!

The joining of the squares was undertaken by my wonderful yarny friend Carole who runs the Knit n Natter sessions at her cafe. She and I have been hooking along together for five years and we were both so excited to see this project coming together.

Whilst Carole was busy stitching up the woolly patchwork, I had a very important hooky job to do. I had to set aside my colourful yarns and work in shades of grey. With black details. I know!! I actually worked with BLACK yarn!!!

As you can see, the black yarn was needed for a pair of eyes. Cute eh?

When the grey and black was finished, I got started with the other part of my task which was to design and crochet a rosette. You know, the sort that gets dished out to Very Fine Animals at agricultural shows.

I so enjoyed making this rosette, it came together really well.

Time to attach the rosette to the woolly grey animal with the cute black eyes.....

Baaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! I crocheted a Sheep's Head!!! Did you expect that??!!

I realise that at this point, you are maybe feeling a tad confused, I do apologise. First there was the cafe, then a pile of knitted squares, and now a sheep's head?! EH???!!!

Well what we were trying to do was to create a delightful, fabulous woolly version of the sheep logo in the above picture.

A handmade Patchwork Sheep no less.

As you can see, we had a very definite job for our Patchwork Sheep. We needed something fun and colourful to adorn some postcards.

Postcards that tell folk about an amazing event due to take place in September this year.....

....introducing YARNDALE 2013. A festival of creativity, celebrating all things woolly and wonderful!

Yarndale will bring together a fabulous mix of retailers, manufacturers, craft workers and artisans from all over the country who are passionate about beautiful yarns, threads and textile treasures.

There will be beautiful yarns, materials, haberdashery, books, kits and hand crafted goodies for sale.

There will be creative exhibitions, demonstrations, displays and workshops.

Did I mention the yarn?

I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to being at Yarndale. It promises to be an exciting and inspiring affair, with a great mix of things to do and see. There are already a good number of amazing artists and craftspeople who have booked a stand, but the Yarndale committee is looking for more. Would you like to take part? Do you know of anybody who would love to come and sell/demonstrate their wool/textile passion? There is lots of information on the Exhibitor page of the website, so do please spread the word and get in touch if you are interested.

I will be taking part at Yarndale, oh yes, I will most definitely be there. I'll be sitting on a chair surrounded by crochet blankets with my back resting against a crochet cushion, hooking and nattering the day away in the "knit n natter lounge". Rose Heart Hanger

 

Hello! Before I begin, I would just like to say a big ((THanK YoU)) for the great response to my Year End Reviews. It was a totally indulgent pleasure-fest putting those posts together, and I'm glad you enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed making them.

I received a great many enquiries about the little Heart Hanger I showed in my crochet review, so I thought it would be good to share some info on that sweet make.

The heart pattern is not mine, it was written by an amazing Dutch hooky lady who goes by the name of BeaG. A good friend discovered this pattern a few years ago (she made some red hearts with white embroidery to hang on her Christmas tree), and I stashed the info away in my Creative Mind to be brought out at some Future Date. Roll on a year or two and there I was, looking for something suitable to create as a Birthday gift for my wonderful friend and neighbour who lives at number eighteen.

The pattern is written up on Flickr, you can find it HERE. Please note :: the pattern is written in US terms, so where it tells you to SC throughout, that means Double Crochet for us Brits. You start at the bottom point and work your way up for twenty rows. After that you work first one round part, and then the other on the opposite side. It's not hard, so long as you know how to increase and decrease in double crochet.

So I made two identical hearts from a bamboo/cotton yarn on a 3.5mm hook. I gave the hearts a light press with the steam iron as they ended up very curly when first made. The rose and leaves are from my own pattern which you can find HERE.

Ta-dah! A very simple idea, but very sweet. It turned out good!

A few things to say about the making up...........

1. You will need to stitch on the rose and leaves before you join the two hearts together.

2. the hanger is a simple crochet chain, which I also attached to the back of the front heart before joining the two hearts together. I've made other Heart Hangers where I've used a short length of narrow spotty ribbon instead, which looks very pretty.

3. To join the hearts together :: begin at the top/centre (the bit where the hanging loop is) and work around the shape in double crochet, inserting hook through the stitches of both hearts. Work with the front facing you and keep your tension quite loose so that the shape doesn't pucker. You might need to add in a few extra stitches as you work around the bottom point.

4. Don't forget to add the stuffing before you get to the end of the joining! I used a polyester toy stuffing which I scented with rose essential oil, but it would also work really well stuffed with dried lavender.

I added a very sweet little message to my heart which reads "There is no set path just follow your heart". Isn't that lovely? I bought it from a local shop along with a few others, but just had a quick search online (they are produced by gift-ware company "East of India") and found a supplier for you....see here and here.

I think the Heart Hanger would look just as lovely without the message though. Maybe even with a double rose, or perhaps a little posy of teeny tiny flowers and leaves?

I also want to show you this...I've used the May rose with my triple-leaf pattern (find it in this post) to add a decorative touch to some gift wrapping. Cute idea eh?

Well I think that's about all I can think of to tell you about the Heart Hanger, I hope it's been helpful if you fancy giving it a go.

I think being able to gift someone a little bit of heartfelt creativity is a very special thing indeed. Yay for Hooky Handmade!

2012 :: Year End Review :: home

A visual celebration of Everyday Life in the Attic during 2012. Enjoy....................

Ahhhhhhhh. Wasn't that good? Sixty Seven images that capture a year of ordinary days at home. It is my Everyday, my sweet, ordinary, uncomplicated life.

This is the last of my Year End Reviews, and by far my favourite. In fact I think this collection of photos is one of my bestest ever.

I love the subtle shifts through the months from January to December. I love that each image is like a little window through to a whole landscape of memories. I just love to be reminded how good home life can be, how wonderful the little details are.

I choose to live my days creatively and in full colour, with a huge dash of positive thinking. I celebrate the small pleasures and the little luxuries. I look for the happy stuff, seize it with both hands and enjoy it to the full. I tell myself daily how lucky I am to be living this life, and I am so grateful for all that I have.

2012 has been such an enjoyable hooky year for sure. I had the pleasure of working on a Big Project (my ripple blanket) for much of the year, but interspersing it with many small, decorative projects kept my creativity alive and kicking.

Thank you as always for all your hooky love throughout 2012. I've LOVED seeing so much gorgeous crochet happening all over the world, the sharing and inspiring that happens through the www is absolutely amazing.  There are currently three Flickr Groups for Attic24 inspired crochet ::

Attic24 Inspired, Attic24 Granny Stripes, and Attic24/Little Tin Bird Ripple-along.

Also, in case you didn't already know, there is an inspiring and thriving Attic24 group on Ravelry, with over 6000 members. There have been some fantastic discussions and sharing of projects on there this year, it's an absolute gem of inspiration and information.

And lastly, at the beginning of December, I finally took the plunge and created an Attic24 Facebook page. It's lots of fun keeping in touch with you all....here's to a wonderful and woolly 2013!

2012 :: Year End Review :: flowers

Wowsers! That was pretty full on wasn't it?! Hahahaa!!

I cannot for the life of me contemplate a home life without fresh flowers :: for me they are vital to my well being, and during the few days/weeks in a year when I forget them, I miss them terribly. They bring colour, happiness and vitality to a room, and add a huge dose of undiluted pleasure to the days.

I really enjoy buying my bunches of seasonal flowers and pots of inexpensive bulbs from the market/shops, it's a sweet weekly ritual that I love. Daffodils, narcissi, hyacinths, tulips, sweet williams, stocks, roses, dahlias, sunflowers :: it's the Floral Year.

However, my summer/autumn homegrown posies are without a doubt my Complete Favourite.  In my dreams, I would love to grow more of my own summer garden annuals as I love them so much, but as yet I have not managed to be organised enough. One day. One day I will create the back yard of my dreams, full to the brim with roses, sweet peas, marigolds, cosmos, nasturtiums, geraniums,  cornflowers and sunflowers. I will fill jugs instead of little ink bottles. The flowers will be abundant. One day.

Happy New Years Day

Day 1 of 2013, and all is well. We enjoyed a really lovely end to the Old Year last night, celebrating with friends and neighbours a little further up the street. Delicious food, mulled wine, happy children, lots of chat and laughter. Our Little People amazed us with their stamina, most especially Little B who took centre stage right through to the midnight hour.

We were all feeling a little tired and sleep deprived this morning, but we decided on the spur of the moment to head out into the countryside. We drove a few miles out of town to one of our most favourite go-to places when fresh air and sweeping vistas are required.

Just as we arrived, a beautiful rainbow appeared as if by magic, oh such joy! I took it as a supremely good omen that 2013 is indeed set to be bright and cheerful with a little dusting of good fortune.

I love walking in winter, even if it is just a swift, cold, wild and windy stroll. I love being immersed in the landscape, and I love nature's little details that spring out and grab attention.

It was actually bitterly cold up on the moor, too cold for the Little People really, so after a short and bracing walk, we drove down into the valley to one of our favourite picturesque villages for a stroll along the riverside.

A short way along there is a small river beach that the Little People love. It's sandy but has lovely pebbles to throw into the water.

There is much fun to be had from plopping large, smooth round stones into the river. Such a satisfying noise! Such childish pleasure that never fails to make me laugh out loud.

Little Man found an amazing river fossil, he was sooo pleased with his discovered treasure I wish you could have seen his sweet face.

The Winter countryside can sometimes appear very grey and bleak, and I find I really, really miss the leaves.

But there are still some small, colourful details to be found if you look for them.

I think the little itty-bits of living winter green are even more vibrant when surrounded by so much grey and brown.

Back home and all is cosy and peaceful here at number 24. Little B, exhausted by all the fresh air and pebble throwing,  is snuggled up in blankets and sound asleep on the sofa. Little Lady is snuggled in the big chair watching pop videos on tv. J and Little Man are up in the Attic doing boy-things together (not exactly sure what that entails, but they've been up there for quite some time).

And me....well I have created a colourful snuggle nest for myself and am about to settle down for a spell of happy hooky.

This is my first crochet task of 2013 - to finish the Granny Patchwork Blanket I started in September. I've got four more rows (48 squares) to make, then a nice wide border to finish. I'm enjoying this blanket very much and it's a warm and comforting way to begin the New Year.

In the next few days I'm going to be continuing with my Year End Reviews. I've been having lots of fun trawling through twelve months of photo archives, putting together some visual collections to celebrate 2012. First up we'll be immersing ourselves in some Floral Loveliness, it's going to be a complete overload of colour and natural beauty.
