This morning I woke up at 3.35am needing to go take a pee, and was suddenly and frustratingly very wide awake. So after lying in bed staring at the ceiling for about forty minutes, I decided I may as well get up and make the most of what is quite a special and usually unseen time of day.
Daylight was arriving, soft and golden, and all was quiet and peaceful.
I came downstairs and made myself some steaming hot tea in my huuuuuuge morning mug, with some toast and jam (Bonne Maman "Berries and Cherries", now what a mighty fine preserve that is) and wondered for a while what to do with my wide awake self.
J's MacBook was on the dining table so I decided on an inspiring little stroll through two of my absolute favourite Flickr group pools (this one and this one)....
....and then I knew just what to do.
Of course.
The most relaxing, soothing, enjoyable thing to do with a spare hour or two :: some gentle blanket-making.
So there we were, five am, just the two of us.
Me and BB.
And it was quite blissful.
I hooked and drank tea as the sun rose in the sky and the light began to stream in through the front window.
For an hour and a half I was alone, then one by one my family came to join me.
J first at 6.30am, drinking his morning coffee and reading yesterdays papers.
Then a sleepy Little Lady tiptoed in at 7am and tucked herself cosily at the other end of the sofa where she could snuggle her feet under BB and watch as I worked.
And finally at 7.30am, Little Man joined us, thundering down the stairs and bounding in like an over excited puppy.
Ahhhhhh I Love Love LOVE weekends!
Even the ones with an Early Start.
Happy Saturday everyone!

Wow - that blanket is absolutely gorgeous and I'm totally envious of someone being able to make such a beautiful treasure. I haven't learnt to crochet yet, but have a hook and am starting to teach myself right now - your work is a true inspiration and hope to be able to crochet something half as beautiful in time.

I so enjoy following your blog! I love all your crochet work, your color combinations and choices are simply stunning! Your ripple pattern inspires me to work on a ripple again - the first for me in a decade or more!! I'm currently stuck in a stripey mode and loving it.

I love the colours in your photos.
I check your page everyday to brighten my day. I am a beginner at crochet - and loving it! Do you have any recommendations for a slipper pattern?

I always get a morning cuppa brought to me before 5am EVERY morning - arh, the joys of living on a farm but it is nice to get up, esp with the light mornings and get things done before everybody else wakes up.
BB looks gorgeous and love ya mug

This comment is less about the early rising and more about your lovely crochet work. I love your beautiful blanket! And I was so inspired by your crocheted bag that have started one for myself. I admit I would really have liked to use the bright colors you did but alas I am using what I have around the house and only found a smattering of the brights. So I am going with a more subdued two-tone theme this time. I'll try to take a picture when I'm finished. Thank you for your inspiration!

Hi Lucy,
I'm writing because I'm worried about you! My daily routine is always checking my favorite European blogs--Tongue in Cheek, Chez Larsson, and then Attic24. Is everything okay with you? I've missed "our" daily visits and I can only hope you haven't written much because your days are just chock-full of good things and you're too exhausted from having fun.
I hope that's the case! Take care. :o)

Hi just found your blog, and what a treat! I am a total anglophile (my ancestry is about 70% English, so it was inevitable!), I love all things English, and have dreamed all my life of visiting there. I can vacation vicariously through your blog! I too love buttons, and ribbons, and colors, and baking, and......CROCHET! I wish I could sew though, but planning to take a class soon! I'll stop by each day to see what you're up to!

It's posts like these that make me want to wake up far earlier than I do right now. But how does one transition from night owl to morning lark?? Maybe someday I can start seeing that time of day...

Great flickr groups! I hadn't seen the granny square one yet.

Hi Lucy!
Do you use the same colours in BB as you did on the summer blanket? Actually, I just ordered the same 13 coulors of Rowan pure wool dk as you had in it. I do love your colourchoices.
Maybe a stupid question, but, what's "dk" stand for in that yarn? Here in Sweden I haven't seen it before.
I've done some blankets and bags inspired by all your beautiful things, but I don't have any blog or homepage, so I can't show you them.
Anyway, I just love your blog!

How I wish I needed less sleep, unfortunately I'm a big sleeper, able to sleep for England! If I don't get enough sleep, I feel nauseous and spaced out. The thought of having extra crocheting time! Would be heavenly. Love all the colours in this post, and you surrounded by blankets, with their gorgeous colours, very lovely and somehow reassuring.

Enjoy the simple things in live as always. I normally do something similar (read, crochet, knit or embroider) when waking up on impossible hours. Sooths the thoughts rushing through my head. ; )

Lucy I do have a question for you...
all of your crocheting is beautiful. How do you go about choosing the perfect colors?? The colors you choose always flow so beautifully. You certainly have an eye for color!

Oh! What a treat to see your crochet projects. They are so very lovely. I am trying to learn your Ripple Pattern. I keep at it and someday maybe my crochet will look as wonderful as yours! Thanks for sharing.

My life has gone in phases - up early with the tiny tots and then loafing around with the teenagers. Now that they are out of the house I can do as I please and getting up at 4.30am is not the way forward for me - no sirree! I prefer a civilised 7am.

Isn't it fun to step out of one's usual routine? Every so often I stay up much, much later than normal, and love that night quiet. Waking up early also can show me more about how a day truly begins.
Fun to beat the bird song!
Also fun to see those granny square flicks.
