Isn't it funny how domestic life falls into
little routines all by itself? As far back as I can remember, J has
always been the first to get up. Its often quite hideously early and
often before the Little People surface, but thats fine by me. I get to
stay in bed in that delicious place half way between sleeping and being
awake, enjoying the cosiness and warmth of our bed and waiting for my
cup of tea to arrive. It's always in my pink spotty morning mug and
always piping hot and with one sugar in (I don't take sugar during the
rest of the day). One thing you can say about J is that he makes a
"proper good brew" as they say here in Yorkshire. He
squeeeeeeeeeeeeezes the teabag to within an inch of its life to get the
maximum teaness out of it, and puts just the right amount of milk in so
that it stays very hot. This time of our morning is somewhere around
6am, even on weekends.
Oh how I love early weekend mornings, to me
they are one of life's little pleasures. J and me, sitting together in
companionable silence sipping tea and enjoying the utter peace and
tranquility of life before the Little People tumble in. Sometimes we
are lucky and get half an hour before they show up but mostly its about fifteen minutes or so. They are still small enough to want to climb in with
us and we get to have top notch family time, talk and tickle, laugh and cuddle, lark about a little. This is Part One of our weekend mornings.
It doesn't take long before the Little people begin to outstay their welcome. They begin to get restless and fidgety and the volume rises. Then I take them downstairs and shamelessly park them in front of the television. During the week we don't have the television on at all in the mornings so at weekends this is seen as as a major Little People treat. They snuggle up on the sofa with blankets and cushions and I provide milk and honey sandwiches or toasted crumpets and leave them to it. Its then my turn to be tea lady and I make the second round of tea with toast and back to bed I go.
J reads, and I select one of my weekend bed activities piled beside the bed :: crochet (of course), magazines (naturally), a book (yes, what else?) Oh and my new little black baby. Ah yes, can you see it nestling there next to the latest issue of Country Living and the Ripple? It was a very generous gift from J a few weeks ago, a dinky little baby laptop to use all over the house. Perfect for sitting in bed and browsing or blogging. This is Part Two.
Sometimes if I'm very lucky and time it right I get Part Three of my Saturday morning. Its a little bit of me-time before the morning activities really gets underway (in the case of this Saturday morning when these photos were taken it was a horrid 2 hour stint for a Birthday party at a noisy, crowded soft play full of screaming kids).
Its somewhere around 8.30am and I am still in my pyjamas but have already made breakfast, washed the dishes and am about to have a shower and get dressed. But I can't pass by the bed without it luring me one last time for a small moment of peaceful crochet. Just a little ripple or two, because it is laying there on the bed tempting me and I can't resist its pretty, ripply charms.
So there you have it, the Three Phases of my Saturday morning. Love 'em.
